I remember years ago, my ears could still stand Linkin' Park or jon Bon Jovi's husky screams at almost full-volume. When I took my daughter to an internet cafe, she pulled me to listen to a song that was blasting away in her headphones. Even before I put the foam muffs on my ears, I just had to beg off…to the perplex of my first borne, she states "Its just Linkin'Park…". Oh, yeah, right…
Several days after this incident when I had declared myself borderline "old-fashioned matron" I came across an article on how noise affects the environment. Because of human-kinds higher knowledge and ability to try and make things easier for us. Through the thousands of years where our progenitors graduated from hairy loins to present designer thongs our sensitivity to touch, sound and sight have diminished. Some border callousness of mind and body because of dependency on technology and everything automatic.
Sadly the animals around us do not adjust well to the sounds of our machinery nor the disturbances our helplessness cause. Ever notice how a plant from the country side almost never flourishes as it did? Growth development between plants grown in quieter environs are like night and day. Even animals react radically to noise, yet we do not notice: city birds tend to mate call louder than their country kin, animals dependent on sonic vibrations to track their flock get lost often, intense noise hamper egg laying in hens and cause miscarriages in some animals.
The harm can't be undone overnight, yet we still can lessen noise in our own lives. If you have to shout to get to be heard at a party might as well look for a place to continue your conversation when it can' wait. Want music while doing housework? Keep blaring music to yourself, lower the bass of your amplifier, bass travels beyond the walls. Train your pet not to make irritating and unnecessary noise- separation anxiety is curable, just be patient and constant.
Lastly, better not wait 'till your kids grow up. The value of silence contributes a lot to lessening impulsive thinking and indecisiveness. Nagging and badgering is also a source of noise and pressure- if you're a parent, heart to heart talks happen toned down and calm manner.
